3# Rant of the week

It feels like it’s been a lot longer than a week since my last rant.. this week I’m ranting about education, again. The academic year below me, which is year twelve I think, are the first of students to be affected by the new changes in education, which is that students must stay within education until they are eighteen now. So that could be college, sixth form, an apprenticeship or employment that has a proper training scheme. I’m not bothered by the fact that the changes didn’t effect me, I chose to stay in education anyway. But that’s the thing, I chose to. This means that all of the years below me didn’t get to make that choice, only the choice of where they want to go. And this is what I have a problem with.

When I was leaving school I was scared of what would happen next, but I was also so excited to start college at the same time. In school, I had always found it irritating when you get those people in the class who ruin the lesson for everyone else because of their misbehaving (yes I know, call me a keener), but I was most looking forward to the maturity at college, where this wouldn’t happen anywhere near as much. And my expectations were fulfilled, I didn’t have to put up with those annoying people in the class. However now that the choice to stay in education or not has been taken away, the new year group in college is full of those annoying people! I get it, sometimes we don’t want to do anything, or we’re bored, but that doesn’t mean that you have to ruin it for everyone else!

College actually feels like school again now. And I liked college, I didn’t like school.

2# Rant of the week

Why is it that no matter what mobile phone company you go with, you always have problems?

My rant this week is all about the lovely company Virgin Media. At home we have the TV, internet and landline with them, and my mobile phone contract is with them aswell. When my phone contract first started, it was (almost) absolutely fine. But in the last 6 months, they have gotten every single phone bill wrong. The first time I noticed it, it said on the ‘my account’ page that I had apparently made phonecalls/texts to an American mobile number! I don’t even know anyone in America that I could text or ring. It’s ridiculous, and they were trying to charge me for it. The second time it happened, it said on the bill that I had apparently ran up almost £10 worth of phonecalls with numerous different 08 numbers!? Considering I’m only a college student and the only people I contact on my phone are my friends and family, I don’t even know how they think I’ve done that. After these first two times, I rang them up to get the charges taken off. Fair enough, the man on the phone did apologise and they did take it off, but it still shouldn’t have happened in the first place, let alone twice!

The next months phone bill comes through, and they’ve messed it up again. This time in a different way though. Because I have the TV and everything else with them, my phonebill is discounted. But they didn’t take the discount off, making the bill twice as expensive as what it normally is! Yet again, I rang them up, and again, they did sort it, but I really don’t think that’s the point. I shouldn’t have to ring up every single month to get the bill corrected. Every single month since up until now they have not taken the discount off, and I have had to ring up to get them to manually do it! Why can’t they just sort it out so that it doesn’t happen anymore?

I would just leave them when my contract ends (which isn’t that long now), but if I do then I won’t get the same discounts that I get now. Bummer. It’s so horrible aswell having to try and explain to my mum that I haven’t actually gone over every month, she freaks out and thinks that I have, probably because when I was younger I did actually used to go over the contract all the time. But I don’t anymore!

So please Virgin Media, SORT IT OUT!

1# Rant of the week

It seemed necessary to start doing a rant of the week on a Monday. Everybody hates this day. I decided that this week I am going to rant about the numerous changes that have been made to A-Levels. I know that many people support the changes that have been made, but personally I really hate what has been changed!

First of all, they scrapped January exams. This really ticked me off because on the actual petition/government website they said that a major reason for removing the January exams was because students were doing ‘tactical resitting’. And yeah, I agree with that as I have seen people thinking “it’s alright if I don’t do that well this time, I can resit it”. However I have never done this, and I’m sure there are many other people who don’t do that either! I loved having January exams because for me, it meant that half way through the year I could have a clear understanding of what level I was working at, and I could also then easily see what I needed to do in order to achieve the grade I wanted. Now, I’m just going to have to wait until the summer exams, do them, and hope that it’s enough for the grades I want. I think have exams twice in the year did make it a bit easier, but not the actual A-Level, it simply made getting the grade you want easier. And why couldn’t the changes have been made when it would only effect the new starting students?

Another change that has been made which I really don’t welcome is the changes the exam board made to my Communication and Culture course. Originally, we had to produce a ‘creative presentation’ such as a video which had to be about ten minutes long, and include the key theories we’d covered as well as a cultural aspect (which for us this year, is a song). HALF WAY THROUGH the academic year we find out that this has been changed, and that now it only has to be around five minutes long, and that it has to be more creative than last specified. Our teacher suggested a song, dance or poem. You have got to be kidding me, right? I can’t sing, dance or write poems. I was perfectly happy producing a video, but now that’s apparently not creative enough. Just like I said above, if they were going to make these changes then they could have at least done it at the start of the year. I understand that a lot of people would prefer this, but I already had some pretty cool ideas on what I was going to do and now I can’t use those ideas.

College sucks!
